by admin on August 5, 2010

It has long been known that a whiter smile is more appealing to people. Teeth whitening has been practiced since ancient times, and may of the more natural ways of whitening teeth are used today, by regulating one’s diet to ensure a clean, bright smile! Certainly, there are ways to whiten your teeth with gels, strips, and pens, but another great tool is food. That’s right, foods can either help or hurt your teeth, depending on how they are eaten and what you’re eating.

Not To Eat

It is best to not drink coffee, tea, colas or red wine, which are all known to stain teeth and cause some decay of the enamel. Apples and potatoes can cause discoloration, but they also tend to clean off the teeth. Just wash your mouth out after eating apples.

Great things to do for your teeth

  • Strawberries can be made into a puree and smothered on the teeth, as strawberries have a natural enzyme that removes tooth stains.
  • Orange peels can be used to remove tooth stains, just by rubbing the inside of a peel against your tooth surfaces.
  • A little lemon juice and salt work very well to remove stains just wash your mouth out with this, or even rock salt and warm water will work at night to remove stains.
  • Baking soda has long been known to work wonders on your smile. It may taste awful, but put some baking soda on your toothbrush, brush with it, and then wash your mouth out.

Also, if you are a tobacco user, stop or slow down your tobacco use, as both dipping and smoking can cause tooth discoloration. Avoid mouthwash, as it sometimes will stain teeth. Finally, remember that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Going to the dentist once or twice a year for a cleaning and checkup will do your smile wonders.

Teeth Whitener FAQ

by admin on August 3, 2010

1. What are my options if I want to get my teeth whiter?
You have four general options

  • Go to a dentist’s office and get an in-office treatment.
  • Get a light activated “Laser” treatment device such as Zoom or BriteSmile.
  • Get strips or a gel kit.
  • Use a brush-on toothpaste or pen treatment

2. Is it safe?

Generally speaking, yes. If the product uses a standard chemical, with a standard concentration, there is little or no effect on the enamel or the gums. Teeth bleaching solutions shouldn’t be used by pregnant or lactating women or by children. If you have any questions about safety, no one is more qualified than your local dentist to answer your questions!

3. How long does a whitening treatment last?

Generally, bleaching will last from four to six months, then do a touch-up with one or two treatments and it should continue to last.

4. How long does it take to whiten teeth?

Results vary. Generally the top range is 2 months, but some show results instantly, fade a little then have a beautiful whiteness that lasts after 2-3 days.

5. What result does it have on veneers, caps, and bondings?

Bleaches will work only on natural tooth structure, not on the artificial dental work. You may need to replace some of your dental work after your teeth are whitened.

6. Should I avoid coffee/tea during/after the whitening process?

Yes. It’s usually recommended to stay away from coffee and tea for 1 week after beginning your whitening process. For a coffee guy, myself, I hate giving up my morning java, but the results are definitely worth it!

7. Will the results be the same for everyone?

No. Results and the time it takes to get the desired results vary. Some people reach an ideal shade after 2-3 days, but some people it takes a whole month to see results.

Keeping Your Teeth White

by admin on August 3, 2010

There are plenty of ways to keep your teeth white, naturally, safely, and effectively. A touch-up is usually required within 6 months or so. So, 1-2 applications of your teeth whitener after 6 months will keep them white.

  1. Tea, red wine, coffee, and tobacco can stain teeth. Try to avoid these. I’ve drank coffee regularly since I was 11 years old, and it is indeed the best stuff in the world. However, giving it up every so often to make my teeth whiter with a strips system is worth the while.
  2. Brush your teeth after every meal, or at least twice a day. If you’re eating something that stains teeth easily, brush after those meals too.
  3. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, and broccoli. These are naturally abrasive and remove stains from teeth while keeping the enamel free from harm.
  4. Strawberries have natural enzymes that, when pureed make an excellent teeth cleaner.
  5. You can brush your teeth with hydrogen peroxide, or lemon juice and salt, or with baking soda. These may not taste good, and you best wash your mouth out very well afterwards, but the results are worth the awful tastes.

Keep Teeth White

Another way is continued usage of a teeth whitener every six months. We suggest that you do this more often if you are a coffee drinker, tobacco user, or have a difficult time remembering when to brush your teeth. For a lot of consumers, one of the easiest things to do is carry a teeth whitening pen with you. Just remember that teeth whitening products do not whiten your teeth permanently. The stainers that you expose your teeth to after applying a whitener will cause your teeth to stain again. If you totally avoid these stainers you can wait up to a year before applying a whitener, otherwise you will need to touch up your teeth on a weekly basis and utilize an entire whitening system every month or other month.

Natural Teeth Whiteners

by admin on August 3, 2010

Natural teeth whiteners are often better for your body and are great for your smile. If a child needs to brighten his or her teeth, or if you are a pregnant or nursing woman, or even if you don’t like the idea of putting carbamide peroxide into your mouth, these suggestions might help you. There are plenty of suggestions to naturally whiten your teeth with foods and other products that you can find in your kitchen! Remember that not everyone’s teeth are the same and vary even more than the types of stains that can inflict your teeth with yellow splotches.

  1. Strawberries contain natural enzymes that act to clean teeth. Simply by eating strawberries and chewing them well, your teeth can be cleaned. The enzymes in the strawberry are activated when they are crushed or ground up, so pureeing the strawberries before you eat them, or even brush your teeth with them do amazing things for your teeth! In fact, researchers have found that the best teeth whiteners are, indeed, fruit!
  2. Orange peels work as well to make your teeth shiny. Just rub the inside of the peel across your teeth and your shine will be healthier. The inside of the peel acts as a gentle abrasive that is safe for teeth. I generally chew my orange peels, as unusual as it sounds, I picked that trick up from my mom who used to do that when she was sick. Orange peels are loaded with Vitamin C.
  3. A mixture of lemon juice and salt does your smile good; as well as putting baking soda on your tooth brush.
  4. Crunchy fruits and vegetables act as an abrasive agent, causing stains to vanish and plaque to be removed.
  5. Try gargling a mixture of rock salt and warm water at night. Use one teaspoon in an 8 oz glass of warm water.

Teeth Whitener Risks

by admin on August 3, 2010

With bleaching, there are risks that need to be taken into account. Generally speaking, teeth whitener products are more or less safe for people, but there can be side effects to leaving a treatment in too long, or having a treatment that is too intense, or to having too high of a concentration of the chemical. Three very prominent risks are

  • Chemical burns, if the concentration is too high. Usually a hydrogen peroxide gel is a 10% concentration, and carbamide peroxide gel is 6% concentration. Keep this in mind as you read the packages of teeth whitener, and remember that if it is too high of concentration, then it might cause some damage to your Mucous Membranes
  • Overbleaching is caused when you leave the product in your mouth for well over the period of time proscribed on the label, and you end up with “over-bright teeth”. In the box above, you can see a short (1 minute and change) video clip of my favorite episode of NCIS, where the main character actually did this and ended up with over-white teeth.
  • If you’re using a product that guarantees several shades whiter in one hour, it’s probably too good to be true. It may last for an hour or so, then “rebound” will occur and your teeth will go back to their former color. Experts have found that a one-hour dentist’s chair session can cause a complete rebound within seven days! As the teeth rehydrate, they go back to being yellowed.

The product in teeth whitener bleaches is generally not harmful in the low doses that are proscribed. Do not use if you are pregnant, nursing, or a child. If you have questions, ask your dentist or other oral care professional. The best source of information are the people who have gone to dentistry school and know all about these products. They are a great resource to turn to when you need advice regarding the risk of at home whitening products.

Teeth Discoloration

by admin on August 3, 2010

Tooth stains are caused by various factors, ranging from lifestyle, medication, diet, and genetics.

Lifestyle choices include tobacco use, poor dental hygiene (i.e. not brushing and flossing) and so forth. I understand that giving up tobacco use, both chewing and smoking, can be a real pain. I personally have been there before, but the benefits from making this excellent health choice can not only brighten your teeth, but also improve your metabolism, give you more energy, help you breathe better, and the list goes on. Brushing and flossing are also of prime importance when you are trying to whiten your teeth. Brush for thirty to sixty seconds at least twice daily will drastically improve your smile and the overall health of your teeth and gums. Remember what Mr. Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure!”

Medications such as anti-histamines, antibiotics, blood pressure medication, and antipsychotics can cause your teeth to discolor. The first two are usually temporary medications, as anti-histamines take care of short-term allergic reactions, while antibiotics are mostly prescribed for several days. However, with blood pressure medication and antipsychotics, you may need to find a teeth whitener that will keep the yellowing from coming out of control. Ask your doctor about side effects to any medications you take or are being prescribed.

If you drink colas, coffee, tea, or red wine, you may often experience teeth discoloration. Some fruits and vegetables also stain the teeth.

Advancing age, genetics, diseases, and even physical trauma during development can cause teeth discoloration.

The best way to prevent this is to brush and floss regularly, and see a dentist at least once, ideally twice per year. If you do need to whiten teeth, try out a pen, gel, or strip system to restore your teeth to their whitest!

Teeth Whitener Basics

by admin on August 3, 2010

The parts of the teeth that are involved in teeth whitening are the enamel and the dentin, which lies underneath the enamel. Enamel, the hardest substance in the body, is actually a nearly-transparent substance. Underneath that is dentin, which is off color. To whiten the teeth, you need to apply a peroxide product to whiten the dentin.

Tooth Diagram

It is important that prevention is better than cure. Brushing and flossing daily, as well as a yearly or semi yearly trip to the dentist, are the best way to keep your teeth white.

There are two different ways to whiten your teeth. You can go to the dentist’s office and have him/her perform a laser procedure or a bleaching procedure on your teeth.
